Stem Cell Transplantation and Hematologic Malignancy Program treats blood-related cancers and cancers of the lymphatic system. Specialists in this area include medical oncologists who focus on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cancer, and hematologists, whose specialty is the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases. Many physicians are credentialed in both specialties.
The team guides the patient through his or her cancer treatment. Treatments may include chemotherapy, biologic response modifiers, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, radiation, marrow transplantation and other new systemic therapies.
Each patient's treatment plan, including other medical and psychosocial issues, is discussed during weekly team meetings. Oncology-certified nurses coordinate the services and function as point persons to provide support for the patient and family during the entire process.
