Carol M. Baldwin Care Center Awarded National Accreditation
In May 2024, the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a quality program administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), granted accredited status to the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center at Stony Brook Cancer Center for another three consecutive years
To achieve voluntary NAPBC accreditation, a breast center demonstrates compliance with the rigorous NAPBC standards that address a center’s leadership, clinical services, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement for patients.
As a NAPBC-accredited center, the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center is committed to maintaining levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive, patient-centered, multidisciplinary care resulting in high-quality care for patients with breast disease. Patients can be confident that their breast care team includes healthcare professionals from a variety of disciplines who are committed to working together to provide the best care available through their entire course of treatment. Patients receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center also have access to information on clinical trials and new treatment options, genetic counseling, and patient-centered services including psychosocial support, rehabilitation services and survivorship care.
“We are proud to announce that the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center recently received a full 3-year re-accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), without ANY deficiencies," said Brian O'Hea, MD, Director, Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center. "Programs that are accredited by the NAPBC have demonstrated excellence in organizing and managing a breast center in order to facilitate multidisciplinary, integrated, comprehensive breast cancer services. In 2009, our breast center became the first in New York State to obtain NAPBC accreditation. This ongoing accreditation is a reflection of the high-quality care offered at our breast center, made possible by the incredible breast cancer team that we have assembled here at Stony Brook."
Dr. O’Hea noted that the NAPBC reviewer said he has personally evaluated and critiqued over 200 different programs in his career and found Stony Brook Cancer Center’s breast care center to be “one of the best he’s ever seen.”
