Cancer Today Fall 2014

Welcome to the inaugural newsletter for

Stony Brook Cancer Center

Momentum is building.

The Cancer Center is in the midst of unprecedented growth. This newsletter will provide up-to date news and advances to benefit your patients. You may already be familiar with the Cancer Center, where more than 3,000 newly diagnosed adult and pediatric cancer cases are treated annually. Perhaps you have sought a collaborative relationship in the past to bring one of your patients highly individualized, multidisciplinary cancer care. As Suffolk County’s only academic medical center, it’s important for the Cancer Center team to serve as a resource and partner with the medical community.

This commitment to the community is perhaps most visible in the new Medical and Research Translation (MART) building. Ground was broken in late 2013, and the project will be completed in 2016. Echoing a collaborative, progressive and team approach to cancer care, the MART will enable scientists to work side by side to advance cancer research and imaging diagnostics. By weaving both together under one roof, a main hub for translational research is being established as well as a synergistic model for cancer care. This, in turn, is driving significant change at the Cancer Center. It is sparking innovation, attracting the best and the brightest physician-scientists, increasing competitive funding and making Stony Brook a vibrant and vital center for advancing the study and practice of cancer medicine.
