Cancer Center Leadership
Message from the Director
As Director of Stony Brook Cancer Center, I am honored to lead a team dedicated to conducting cutting-edge research to find better ways to treat and prevent cancer. Our team is committed to providing the highest quality care, supporting patients and their families at every step, and ensuring that everyone has access to life-changing research opportunities and care.
Stony Brook Cancer Center is growing, expanding its leadership across new frontiers and is changing how we manage and treat cancer. We are expanding our recruitment of world-class researchers and clinicians, expanding programs, launching new clinical trials developed by our researchers, expanding and providing novel forms of supportive care for patients and families, and offering cutting-edge treatments, many developed by us.
At the same time, we are educating the next generation of researchers, healthcare professionals, and developing the workforce of tomorrow. We are doing this with a focus on the needs of the community that surrounds us, and those within it who most need us. This dynamic approach to medicine not only sets us apart but also makes my role as Director profoundly rewarding.
We set a bold vision and we are achieving it. We are building on our strengths as one of the region’s most effective cancer centers, and using that to drive advances in our understanding of cancer and to change how we take care of those with cancer. Having a Cancer Center located on the same campus as the rest of Stony Brook University is very powerful. Faculty from leading programs in engineering, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence, climate sciences, social welfare, nursing and others are active members of Stony Brook Cancer Center research and clinical programs. Together, we are redefining what it means to think and act differently together, and to do so with the intention of creating new approaches to diagnose, prevent, treat and support those with cancer.
Located within the state-of-the-art Medical and Research Translation (MART) building, our Cancer Center fosters collaboration among clinicians and researchers. Together, we provide new forms of therapy, innovative technologies, and personalized treatment plans all through comprehensive multidisciplinary teams of clinicians and researchers.
At Stony Brook Cancer Center, our mission is clear and unwavering: to drive advances in our understanding of cancer and to use that knowledge to provide the safest, most effective, and compassionate care to every person who entrusts us with their care. It is a privilege to lead this incredible institution as we work together to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
Sincerely,
Raymond Bergan, MD
