Treatment and Care

The Hematologic Malignancy Program guides our patients through all stages of treatment. At their first appointment, he or she will meet with the physician, nurse practitioner and nurse coordinator who helps to educate and coordinate the patient's care. The team works in tandem with the Stem Cell Transplant Team to ensure a seamless transition of care from treatment to transplant. Each patient’s treatment plan, including psychosocial issues, are discussed at weekly team meetings, which provides an effortless transition between in-patient and out-patient treatment and care.

At Stony Brook Cancer Center, we are turning the tide against complex blood cancers. Our CAR T-cell therapy program enhances your own immune system, reprogramming your T cells to seek and destroy cancer.

In collaboration with iCell Gene Therapeutics, we are pioneering a first-in-human clinical trial using a novel CD4 CAR T-cell therapy for hard-to-treat leukemias and lymphomas. This innovative treatment, delivered with comprehensive, multidisciplinary care right here on Long Island, offers the potential for lasting benefits and a path to further therapies.

Stony Brook opened the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit—the only one in Suffolk County—in 2004, which allows the hospital to perform both autologous stem cell transplants (from the patient), and allogenic transplants (from a donor match). The program also offers state-of-the-art infection control.

We are a member of the National Marrow Donor Program, which offers patients the opportunity to locate suitable donors should one not be located among family members. We are also a FACT (Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) accredited Transplant Program.
