Research Interest

My research leverages large national databases — including SEER, the National Cancer Database (NCDB), and retrospective resources such as PSORC — to examine pediatric cancer demographics, treatment patterns, and outcomes. Because pediatric cancers are rare, single-institution studies are often underpowered. These broader datasets allow us to discern population-level trends across both traditional pediatric tumors and less common “adult-type” malignancies, such as carcinomas arising in children. Our analyses consistently show that although children with carcinomas frequently present with more advanced disease, their outcomes are markedly better than those of adults, suggesting underlying differences in tumor biology.

The overarching aim of this work is to identify opportunities to refine and individualize therapy. By interrogating large-scale data, we can begin to determine which children may be candidates for de-escalated treatment and which may benefit from more intensive approaches. Ultimately, these findings help shape the hypotheses and clinical questions that will drive future prospective studies, with the goal of delivering more precise, evidence-based care to children with cancer.
