Research Interest

Dr. Nemesure has been a Principal Investigator (PI) on several major research grants and has established a solid track-record of developing, implementing and directing projects related specifically to cancer over the past three decades. Her earlier work included two large, longitudinal NCI/NHGRI funded investigations: the Barbados National Cancer Study and the Prostate Cancer in a Black Population Study, which focused on the identification of epidemiologic and genetic risk factors for breast and prostate cancer.

She continues to work with a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) consortia to further investigate novel susceptibility genes related to these cancer types.  More recently, Dr. Nemesure’s research efforts have been dedicated to addressing the cancer-related needs of our local catchment area.

Currently, her two main areas of interest are:

  • Exploring how diet and changes in the gut microbiome may contribute to early onset colorectal cancer;
  • Exploring how complementary and alternative medicine practices may influence the epigenetic profile and quality of life of cancer survivors.
