Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a lethal disease characterized by the overproduction of leukemic blasts and failure of normal hematopoiesis. While intensive chemotherapy and several new targeted therapies have improved survival, most patients relapse, and allogeneic stem cell transplantation remains the only curative option. Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized solid tumor treatment, but effective checkpoint pathways for AML are yet to be identified. Although monoclonal antibodies, bispecific antibodies, and CAR-T cell therapies have advanced treatments for lymphoid and plasma cell malignancies, similar approaches in AML remain limited by toxicity to normal hematopoiesis.
My vision for improving AML survival focuses on two key areas:
- Targeting leukemic cells: Developing therapies that induce differentiation, promote cell death, or enhance immune surveillance.
- Modulating the bone marrow microenvironment: Improving immune recognition of leukemic cells while preserving normal hematopoiesis.
My basic research investigates the human bone marrow microenvironment and leukemia stem cells in AML patients. Using advanced MACSima Imaging Cyclic Staining (MICS) technology, we aim to identify novel therapeutic targets and strategies.
My clinical research focuses on testing novel therapeutic drug combinations for relapsed and refractory AML and studying biomarkers that guide clinical decisions to reduce toxicity while maintaining or improving efficacy.
