Varian® RapidArc®

RapidArc radiotherapy is one of the most advanced forms of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). This technology uses precise, computer-guided radiation beams to target tumors in a 3D shape, minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues.

What is RapidArc?

RapidArc combines advanced imaging, such as computed tomography (CT), with precision radiation delivery. The technology uses the imaging data to guide the radiation beam during one or two full rotations around the patient. During treatment, the radiation beam constantly adjusts its shape and intensity to focus solely on the tumor while avoiding nearby healthy tissue.

How RapidArc Works

  • 360-Degree Precision: The system delivers continuous radiation beams from virtually every angle, reshaping to match the tumor’s contour.

  • High-Dose Targeting: Provides the exact radiation dose needed to kill cancer cells while sparing healthy areas.

  • Efficient Delivery: Treatments are completed in two to eight times less time than traditional radiotherapy, reducing the need for patients to remain still for long periods.

Benefits of RapidArc

RapidArc offers significant advantages that benefit both treatment effectiveness and patient experience.

Why Choose RapidArc?

  • Shorter Treatment Times: Faster delivery means patients spend less time holding still, improving comfort and precision.

  • Precise Targeting: Radiation is directed exclusively at the tumor, reducing damage to healthy tissue and lowering the risk of side effects.

  • Improved Quality of Life: Short sessions allow patients to maintain their daily routines with minimal disruption during treatment.

At Stony Brook, our commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology is driven by our goal to ensure the best possible outcomes and improved quality of life for our patients. RapidArc radiotherapy exemplifies this dedication by delivering precision, speed and superior care.
