Research Interest
The Jessica Seeliger lab studies the basic biology and therapeutic applications of mycobacteria. Basic research focuses on cell envelope processes in mycobacteria, including human pathogens like Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In particular we are interested in how these bacteria transport metabolites like lipids and proteins through the cell envelope to support their survival and ability to cause disease. We are also taking our experience with protein expression and secretion in mycobacteria into the realm of cancer therapeutics and viral vaccine development. In collaboration with Manhattan BioSolutions, Inc., we are working on modifying the tuberculosis live vaccine strain BCG for cancer immunotherapy and vaccination against COVID-19.
