Meaningful Milestone for Mobile Mammography Program

The Mobile Mammography Program was launched with the intent to provide mammograms in the most accessible way possible for women on Long Island. The program has been a great success, and on March 4, reached an impressive milestone with the 10,000th mammogram visit.

Since 2018, Stony Brook Cancer Center’s custom built, 40-foot state-of-the-art mobile unit has been visiting communities throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties to bring this necessary cancer screening to women ages 40 and over. The van has the latest 3D digital mammography equipment, delivering individual care to each person, with only one patient allowed on at a time. The images are evaluated by radiologists from Stony Brook Medicine.

“To see this program grow from the ground up and to deliver its 10,000th mammogram to a member of our community is such a proud moment for everyone who works for the program, and for all of those who have been a part of our team in the past,” said Patrick J. Dineen, MD, MBA, Program Manager, Cancer Screening and Prevention, Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, Stony Brook Cancer Center. “Our team is honored to be a part of this milestone today, and we want to acknowledge the years our staff visited multiple Long Island communities and businesses, regardless of the time of year or weather conditions, driven by their commitment to this program. All of their hard work led us to this achievement today.”

Many community members now rely on the Mobile Mammography Program for their annual screenings. For an appointment, call 833-MYMAMMO.
