Patient Testimonial

A Simple Wish, A Sweet Memory

On the morning of May 19, Julia Leonard woke up to learn that a "Princess Picnic" was being held in her honor, prompted by her recent comment about wanting to enjoy a fun outdoor luncheon with her family, doctors, caregivers and staff.

In the spirit of going above and beyond for our patients, staff from across Stony Brook Cancer Center and Stony Brook University Hospital collaborated to honor the wishes of the 28-year-old patient with advanced cancer by hosting a special princess-themed picnic on the grounds of the Cancer Center.

“Julia and her family are extraordinary people,” said Julie Gemmill, DO, Medical Oncologist, Stony Brook Cancer Center.  “When Julia shared her simple wish — to eat from a food truck, spend time outside with her loved ones, and roast marshmallows — it touched all of us. We wanted to bring her dreams to life and create an unforgettable experience for her and her family to enjoy.”

Even though Julia has faced lifelong medical challenges — including a neuroblastoma diagnosis and becoming a paraplegic at age 14 — she is an inspiration to all who meet her with her upbeat personality. She wears a tiara every day to make her optimism apparent and to share joy with those around her.

Julia’s mom and dad, along with two of her three sisters, and their pet dog, Buster, also enjoyed the picnic.

“The staff on 19N, where Julia has been staying since September, was thrilled to throw a party to make this day extra special for Julia and her family,” said Patricia A. Doty, MS, RN, OCN, Assistant Director of Nursing, Medical Oncology. “Many others from the Cancer Center and the hospital were happy to pitch in to turn her dream into a beautiful reality and one that we will never forget.”

Thanks to Vincent's Wood Fired Pizza Truck from Setauket, Julia's choice of delicious and comforting food was enjoyed by all. While rocking her tiara, she savored some of her favorite foods, roasted marshmallows, and made s’mores with her loved ones and the dedicated medical staff who have taken incredible care of her. A family friend drove up in an ice cream truck, generously providing sweet refreshments to attendees.
