Survivor is often a word used in connection with cancer. At Stony Brook Cancer Center, we consider “survivorship” to begin the day the patient is diagnosed. For patients with cancer, survivorship continues to the end of their treatment plan.
Survivorship appointments are geared to reduce the risk of lung cancer recurrence. This meeting consists of an interview with the patient and a certified nurse practitioner, which lasts about 30 minutes. A packet is personally prepared for each patient. The information includes a summary of their diagnosis, staging and an appointment schedule for the next five years. Reading material is also part of the packet, including a booklet on life after cancer, cancer to wellness and nutritional information. Support groups and resources are discussed and given to the patient.
This appointment is usually scheduled one to two months after the patient has had his or her last treatment. All questions and concerns are addressed at this uplifting appointment that patients seem to really enjoy as they focus on their future.
