Dr. Linda Mermelstein Receives Community Champion Honor

The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) bestowed its 2nd Annual Community Champion designation upon Linda Mermelstein, MD, MPH, Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement, Stony Brook Cancer Center, at their quarterly Collaborative meeting this past December.

Dr. Mermelstein received this special honor for her commitment to furthering the health of the Long Island community. Since the Collaborative’s inception, she has worked tirelessly by contributing to community health-needs assessments performed by the Collaborative, participating in community educational programs, such as leading “Walk With a Doc” events, and actively participating in various work groups of the organization.

The LIHC is a coalition that includes Nassau and Suffolk County health departments, every hospital on Long Island, health and social service community-based organizations, insurance plans, academic institutions, local governments, and other groups that are working together toward a healthier Long Island community.  Each year, the Long Island Health Collaborative honors one of its active individual members for their outstanding commitment to improving the health of Long Islanders. The recognition is reserved for LIHC members who have extensively contributed their time and expertise to the mission of the LIHC.

Dr. Mermelstein is currently a member of the Collaborative in her role at Stony Brook Cancer Center, and also in her previous work as the Chief Deputy Health Commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services.  She is a graduate of the Preventive Medicine Residency at Stony Brook and serves as a supervisor for residents in the Department of Family Population and Preventive Medicine of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.
