Research Interest
As part of the research team, I have helped to design and implement a recently completed dietary intervention in healthy humans to establish the feasibility of providing custom diets to reduce protein intake. Analysis of subject-reported nutrient intake, along with analysis of participant biological samples, revealed high adherence and substantial biological changes following a reduced protein diet. The analysis of a second feeding trial, designed to explore the impact of plant vs. animal sources of protein on the gut metabolome and intestinal permeability is on-going. Both cross over design feeding trials used a novel approach to capture food consumption in a free-living population as well as allowed for the ability to report any deviations from the study provided foods. My current research project, along with the team, is to apply a similar methodology to patients with breast cancer. A pilot study is planned, to assess a diet change that reduces the amount of protein consumed before and day of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and four days before surgery on the treatment outcomes for patients with breast cancer.
