My research uses large national databases like SEER, NCDB, and retrospective datasets like PSORC to study pediatric cancer demographics and outcomes. Because pediatric cancers are rare, single-institution studies are often underpowered. These larger datasets allow us to evaluate patterns across a broader population, including traditional pediatric tumors and adult-type cancers like carcinomas in children. Our findings suggest that while children with carcinomas often present at more advanced stages, they tend to have better outcomes than adults, pointing toward unique tumor biology.
The goal of this work is to identify opportunities to refine treatment strategies. By analyzing large-scale data, we can determine which patients may benefit from reduced therapy and which may require more aggressive approaches. This research helps generate essential questions for future prospective studies to personalize and improve pediatric cancer care.
