Research Interest
Dr. Yusuf Hannun is an internationally known researcher in the area of lipids, protein kinases and signal transduction. His current research, supported by five National Institutes of Health grants totaling $1.7 million, is focused on studies of bioactive lipids, with a special emphasis on sphingolipids. These studies have allowed him to propose a critical role for sphingolipids in eukaryotic stress responses. Dr. Hannun's lab is interested in understanding how sphingolipid metabolism is regulated under various conditions and in response to extracellular stimuli. They are also interested in defining the functions of bioactive sphingolipids, including sphingosine and ceramide. They perform studies in human cancer cells as well as in yeast as a model organism.
