Research Interest
As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Boykan’s clinical and research interests have focused on addressing tobacco smoke exposure in hospitalized children and e-cigarette use (vaping) among youth and young adults. Recent and active research initiatives include an educational pilot program in three Suffolk County community residences (shelters) to improve tobacco cessation efforts, in collaboration with the Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Office of Community Engagement (COE); a quality improvement initiative to improve screening for tobacco on the inpatient pediatric units of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital; and a multidisciplinary pilot study in collaboration with colleagues at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, evaluating tobacco and cannabis co-use in college students, including urinary biomarker for inflammation related to carcinogenesis, dependence, toxin exposure, and survey data evaluating stress, functioning and dependence/addiction.
