A New Vision & Moving Forward

Dr. Bergan aims to build on the center’s strong foundation in cancer research and world-class clinical care by developing a strategic roadmap for the future. Highlights include:

Research

Create a strategic roadmap

  • Guide the Cancer Center toward National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation by integrating world-class basic and clinical research with cutting-edge clinical trials that address the needs of our community.

Grow the size and impact of our current research programs

  • Harness Stony Brook University’s (SBU) fundamental strengths that are emblematic of the synergistic relationship between the Cancer Center and the robust programs across multiple disciplines at SBU.
  • Elevate these potent growth areas for the field of cancer research and medicine.

Promote Stony Brook Cancer Center as a leader in cancer clinical trials

  • Leverage our stellar physical facilities, designed as a collaborative environment, to maximize researchers’ capabilities to improve ways to detect cancer early, develop novel means to measure it during treatment, and deliver new forms of therapy.
  • Create a dynamic research network across the State University of New York (SUNY) system.

Aim high while staying grounded and focused on our goal of NCI recognition

  • Double our National Institutes of Health funding and more than double our accrual to clinical trials.
  • Increase recruitment of highly talented leaders in research and clinical care while pursuing these achievements.

Establish research programs in the population sciences

  • Build upon existing strengths by strategically layering in researchers with expertise in cancer prevention and control.

Cancer Medicine

Expand clinical programs that meet the specific needs of the Long Island community.

  • Become increasingly recognized as the preferred place to go for cancer care.
  • Increase patient volume while refining operational initiatives to improve access to care.
  • Use state-of-the-art technology to integrate the fields of nursing, social work and engineering to offer personalized cancer care.
  • Leverage our leadership in bioinformatics and AI to better understand cancer risk and improve navigation through the complexities of care.
  • Recruit highly trained, highly skilled physicians.

Medical Education

Educate the next generation

  • Scientists and physicians will become highly trained in cancer medicine and research with the goal of helping them develop into the next innovators and leaders in the field.
