At Stony Brook Cancer Center, we understand that being diagnosed with cancer is life-altering and deserves individualized attention.

Our experts in gastrointestinal cancer bring their world-class knowledge and skills to provide their patients with advanced care that is customized to the type and stage of cancer they have, while accommodating personal needs and quality-of-life issues.

After a diagnosis is made, multiple specialists on the team collaborate to create a comprehensive plan of care for each patient. The three main types of treatment are surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, alone, or in a combination. Immunotherapy treatments are also incorporated when applicable.

There are numerous research studies and projects dedicated to cancer being performed within Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. The majority of clinical trials are developed from research projects. The Cancer Center has more than 100 active cancer clinical trials, several dedicated to gastrointestinal cancer. Patients are encouraged to speak to their doctor and healthcare team to learn if there is an appropriate clinical trial for them.
