Specialists in this area include medical oncologists who focus on the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cancer, and hematologists, whose specialty is the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases. Many physicians are credentialed in both specialties.
The blood cancer and marrow transplant interdisciplinary team guides the patient through his or her cancer treatment.

Stony Brook’s Blood and Bone Marrow Stem-Cell Transplant Team meets weekly to discuss each patient’s treatment plans and other medical and psychosocial issues. Oncology nurses coordinate the Leukemia/Lymphoma Bone Marrow Transplant Services and serve as point persons to provide support for the patient and family during the entire process.
Stem cell transplants. Stony Brook opened the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit—the only one in Suffolk County—in 2004, which allows the Hospital to perform both autologous stem cell transplants (from the patient), and allogenic transplants (from a donor match). The program also offers state-of-the-art infection control.
We are a member of the National Marrow Donor Program which offers patients the opportunity to locate suitable donors should one not be located among family members. We are also a FACT (Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) accredited Transplant Program.
