Lung Cancer Team

Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Lung Cancer Disease Management Team is part of the overall comprehensive Lung Cancer Program.

Treatment choices depend on the type of lung cancer an individual has, test results, and the stage of the cancer. The goal of treatment may be to cure, control the cancer, or help ease problems caused by the cancer. The doctors and nurse practitioners on the team discuss the optimal treatment choices, the goals of treatment, and what the risks and side effects may be, with the patient.

Types of treatment for cancer are either local or systemic. Local treatments remove, destroy, or control cancer cells in one area. Surgery and radiation are local treatments. Systemic treatment is used to destroy or control cancer cells that may have traveled around the body. When taken by pill or injection, chemotherapy and immunotherapy are systemic treatments. A patient may have just one treatment or a combination of treatments.

The treatment options and the benefits and possible side effects of each option are discussed with the healthcare team. All of the patient’s concerns and questions are addressed by the doctor and team before making a final decision about the optimal plan of care.
