Stony Brook Cancer Center’s Lung Cancer Evaluation Center is part of the overall comprehensive Lung Cancer Program. Patients who require diagnostic testing, need prior testing evaluated and/or would like to discuss an optimal treatment plan for their condition or disease can make an appointment with the healthcare team.
Diagnostic testing is performed to treat a non-cancerous disease, evaluate a condition of the lungs or to diagnose or rule out cancer. Most often, the first test is a low-dose CT scan. Additional tests may include flexible bronchoscopy, cardiac stress test, cardio-pulmonary stress test, pulmonary function test, fine-needle aspiration, MRI of the brain and PET/CT fusion-imaging scanning. The interventional pulmonologist uses an endoscope, which is a device that consists of a small tube and an optical system. It is inserted through the mouth, into the airway and lungs. Various types of tools can be inserted through the endoscope for different procedures.
