At Stony Brook Cancer Center, we understand that being diagnosed with cancer is life-altering and deserves individualized attention.

Our 12 Disease Management Teams each have multiple specialists who are experts in the related group of cancers they treat. The teams are comprised of surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncology nurses and social workers. These highly skilled professionals provide patients with advanced care that is customized to the type and stage of cancer they have, while accommodating personal needs and quality-of-life issues. Collaboration and coordination between team members is seamless since they are all located on the same campus and meet regularly to discuss patients’ progress.

Of course, the most important person on the team is the patient, along with their family members. No decision about the care plan is made without the patient’s involvement, understanding and approval.

There are numerous research studies and projects dedicated to cancer being performed within Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine. The majority of clinical trials are developed from research projects. The Cancer Center has more than 100 active cancer clinical trials, which can be accessed in this portal. Patients are also encouraged to speak to their doctor and healthcare team to learn if there is an appropriate clinical trial for them or to discuss one they are interested in.
